I just had a conversation with an old friend Poor fool thinks he’s been born again Baptized in the name of fortune and fame He says he knows where the power lies, he knows who to blame I said who child, who’s been telling you lies Because the revolution starts behind your eyes You can pray for revelation you can look to the skies But the revolution starts behind your eyes Let me tell you about this girl I know... She traded her mary-janes for high-heels And her bubble-gum for cigarettes Blue-jeans for mini-skirts And her candy cane for something else She said hey boy, you wanna go for a ride I said the revolution starts behind your eyes You can pray for revelation you can look to the skies But the revolution starts behind your eyes I knew this gray-haired poet, he had eyes like a crook He could see right through a man with just one look He said that winsome smile and those eyes of blue Don’t they make lying easy for a boy like you He said hey boy, you better put down your pride Because the revolution starts behind your eyes You can pray for revelation you can look to the skies But the revolution starts behind your eyes

I met a man with a suitcase full of hows and whens and whys He had them laid out on the sidewalk in the sun to let them dry He said he'd like to be a king someday upon a foreign shore He said he'd lived a thousand lives by now, what's a couple more I knew a woman, at night she dreamed of frankincense and myrrh And though she don't believe in Jesus she knows he believes in her And in the mirror she finds signs of her accumulating grace As if a prophesy were written in the lines on her face Lately it just seems as if my heart has grown cold And everything I've ever cared about has been sold or stolen Won't somebody take me out of state, please take me out of range Because this life that I've been living has grown dangerous and strange You could put me in a prison cell and I wouldn't miss this place It holds a lifetime full of memories it'll take a lifetime to erase My childhood only lies to me and growing old is a curse And here I stand somewhere between it all just wondering which is worse Lately it just seems as if my heart has grown cold And everything I've ever cared about has been sold or stolen Part of me is out of range, part of me is gone Some dreams die a painless death, while others hold on So hold on

You take the sun from my sky, you make it rain You take a day full of wonderful colors and you make it gray I have no more joy in my life, I know only pain You take the sun from my sky, you make it rain You take the sun from my sky, you make it cold You make this young heart feel so old I try to shelter myself, it's always the same You take the sun from my sky, you make it rain There's only so much one man can give Just so much that one man can do I've seen through your lies and your alibis Tell me now who's fooling who Release my heart, tell me goodbye Put the stars back into my night sky You take a day full of wonderful colors and you make it gray You take the sun from my sky, you make it rain No use in talking, You're always walking away I try to escape, I try to break free from these chains I'm always waiting, hoping despair will subside I can't begin to count the tears I've cried
